Investing in a Greener Planet

Geneva, Switzerland

Today, there is Global consensus that man-made climate change is real and Clean Energy benefits from strong support through both government and public opinion.  Energy security and independence are vital for the global economy and its efficiency is a huge field for potential improvements and investment.

The scarcity of Water, the inevitable increase in demand (our growing population, predicted to reach 9bn by 2050, will drive demand ever higher) and our irreplaceable dependence on it as a resource has led governments to look to outsource water service responsibilities.   This is essential if we are to see any improvement in its outdated infrastructure and maintain an efficient water supply globally.

We are consuming more and more Wood products by the year but there are biological limits on production and a net loss of forest space annually.  Improving the management and carbon storage capacity of forests can, however, play a key role in climate change and wood also continues to become a very real CO2 neutral energy source.

Protein and vegetable oil consumption traditionally grows as wealth increases and it is reported that 1.1 billion people will join the middle class income groups in China and India alone in the next 15 years.  Investments in the Agriculture value chain are therefore an integral part of solving the global food challenge.

Pictet are just about to launch the new Environmental Megatrends Selection - aiming to create a diversified and structured portfolio with a socially responsible exposure to environmental resources.  These megatrends include Changing Global Demographics and the growing scarcity of Water, Arable Land and Timber.  In addition, the portfolio will include investments that are expected to benefit from a shift of Energy Production to Environmental Friendly Resources.
