Where do the Happiest Expats Live?

Insight | by Trudi Hayes

Internations Expat Insider 2019 Survey, ‘The World through Expat Eyes,’ is one of the world’s most extensive surveys about living and working abroad. This year over 20,000 respondents shared their experiences, even including responses from the more unusual expat destinations such as Turkmenistan or Aruba!

In summary, this year, Taiwan has come out in top position as the best place for expats to live, closely followed by Vietnam and Portugal. These top three destinations cover the top spots in three indices which factor into the overall ranking – quality of life, working abroad and personal finance.

Estonia leads the way for digital life, and Finland for its excellent healthcare system.

According to the survey, expats living in Ecuador are the happiest. The country places first, while Portugal ranks second and Spain fourth in this subcategory. Those expats in Oman are particularly pleased with its safety and security and appreciate the peacefulness. Expats are also happy with the political stability there.

Singapore, which always ranks highly, is rated for its varied travel opportunities and quality infrastructure. The city state is close to many popular destinations across SE Asia, and has a fabulous award-winning international airport, making travelling and discovering so much easier. Public transport within Singapore is also highly efficient.

The three countries showing the biggest improvement in the Quality of Life index are Qatar, Poland and Hungary.
